Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 Hearing Aids Introduction
Phonak Lumity is the new product range from Phonak, launched on August 23rd 2022. The Phonak Lumity L90 is the premium technology specification in this platform.

Although Phonak has framed it as a product launch, for practical purposes you can take it as a price hike due to inflation, the motive being Phonak wanting to protect their profits. Coming only a few months since their last major product launch and replacing some of those newly released products, this launch was rather unexpected.

The hearing aids are very similar in appearance to the previous range, the Phonak Paradise. Apart from a few minor features outlined below, they are close to identical. The chip and all of the hardware are the same as what is in the Paradise. In our opinion, these changes should have just been a free software update to the current Paradise models, rather than being sold as a new model.

To put it into context, this is similar to Windows on your computer or the software on your smartphone having an update, which seems to happen every few months, but instead, it has been presented as a new product

 

So let's look at the new features of Phonak Audeo Lumity L90 hearing aids
SmartSpeech: This is the name of the new feature, it encompasses several changes;

 

SpeechSensor: Previously, when in background noise, the hearing aids would detect a speaker in an arc in front of you and automatically focus on that speaker in order to reduce the background noise you hear from other directions. Now the hearing aids can also detect a speaker from the side or back of you and also automatically focus on that speaker in the same way.

It is unclear why this is a benefit as you don't usually hold a conversation with someone facing away from them, however, I am told by Phonak that the idea is that you are alerted to the fact that someone behind you is speaking so you can then turn to face them.

 

Reduced Listening effort: By reducing background noise the aids make it less taxing to follow conversation in noisy situations. A good thing surely, but then we see a little * referring us to the note buried at the bottom of Phonak's own Lumity range page stating: "compared to Phonak Marvel".

So what they are saying is that these aids are better than the ones two generations ago from 2018 but have no significant reduction of listening effort when compared to the Phonak Paradise.

For now, as we have these digital hearing aids on a launch offer and they are only the same price as the Paradise, if you are looking to buy Phonak then it makes sense to buy the Lumity. Once they revert to their full price then many people may choose to go with the Paradise.
